Troubleshooting
Custom folder icon not working?
Most folder icon problems come from selecting the wrong Finder icon, using PNG instead of ICO on Windows, moving the source file, or viewing an old cached icon.

Mac: Paste is unavailable
- Open the PNG in Preview and copy the image content—not merely the file in Finder.
- Open Get Info for the target folder.
- Select the small icon at the very top beside the folder name.
- Confirm that the small icon has a selection outline before pasting.
Mac: The folder shows a generic PNG document
This usually happens when the file itself was copied rather than the pixels inside it. Open the image in Preview, choose Select All and Copy, then paste that copied image into the selected Get Info icon.
Mac: The icon does not change or later resets
- Test with an ordinary folder inside Documents or on the Desktop; protected system folders may reject customization.
- Close and reopen the Finder window after applying the icon.
- Check whether device-management or folder permissions restrict changes.
- For synchronized folders, allow the sync client to finish before testing again.
Windows: The Change Icon dialog cannot use the file
Windows folder properties expect an ICO file. A PNG remains a PNG even if its filename extension is changed. Export or convert it properly as ICO.
Windows: The custom icon keeps reverting
- Move the ICO to a permanent location before assigning it.
- Do not rename, delete, or reorganize the source ICO afterward.
- Reapply the icon from Properties after confirming the file still exists.
- Avoid temporary folders and cloud paths that may make files online-only.
Windows: Explorer still shows the old icon
- Press F5 to refresh the window.
- Close and reopen the parent folder.
- Apply a different icon temporarily, then apply the desired ICO again.
- Restart Windows Explorer or sign out and back in if the cached icon remains.
The icon looks blurry
- Start with artwork at least 256×256 pixels.
- Export 256×256 or 512×512 rather than enlarging a small source.
- Use simple shapes and thicker lines.
- Preview the result at a small size before applying it to many folders.
The overlay is too dark or disappears
Switch blend mode to Normal, increase opacity, or choose a higher-contrast symbol. Multiply and Overlay depend on the base folder color and can make dark artwork disappear.
